| Bio: | ![]() I am I plus my surroundings and if I do not preserve the latter, I do not preserve myself. IC Name: Noah Browning Age & DOB: 40/October 25, 1968 Occupation: Professor of botany, University of Washington, teaching in the Environmental Studies program. He also works in the UW Botanic Gardens, the goal of which is sustaining managed and natural ecosystems through plant research, display, and education. Residence: He lives in the Harbor Steps Apartments in a two-bedroom apartment on the eighth floor. Immediate family: Parents: Paul and Anna Browning. Siblings: Paul Browning Jr, 45, investment broker, married to Elizabeth, two sons, Paul III, (nicknamed Trey), 20, and Josh, 18; Benjamin Browning, 43, journalist, divorced; John Browning, 35, psychiatrist, married to Jennifer, no children as of this time. Noah's wife: Julia, deceased. Skills/talents: He grew up in the midwestern United States, and learned early a love of nature in general and plants in particular, continuing on to earn his doctorate in botany. He has a deft, accurate hand at sketching, handy in his line of work, and from his father he learned to play the acoustic guitar. Noah is very athletic, and it shows in his tall, lanky build. He's an avid runner and runs daily. Biking is also a favored pastime as well as his primary means of transportation, and he's a member of the Cascade Bicycle Club. His love of the woods led to a love of orienteering, a sport in which the participant uses a map and compass to navigate a course through unfamiliar terrain. He swims at least three times a week. Most of those things he did with Julia, but stopped after her death; he's been slowly picking up things again. Personality/quirks/habits: Three words to describe Noah? Determined, curious, and independent. Noah is very much an individual; freedom-loving, he prefers to be self-sufficient rather than a sheep in society who follows everyone else's lead. He's an independent, highly inventive thinker, fueled by humanitarian ideals. Friendly by nature, he is a good listener and cares deeply for his friends, and is playful and spontaneous. He treasures the unique and looks for it in others. He throws himself one hundred percent into whatever he does and he's highly resistant and resentful of the attempts of others to manipulate him. He never gives up and isn't intimidated by anyone or anything. Confrontation is not a problem. Intensely curious, he loves puzzles and mysteries of any kind and has varied interests—as he says, no knowledge is ever wasted, and usually comes in useful at some point or another so it is best to learn as much as you can as you go along. Adaptable and quick to grasp things both physically and intellectually, he prizes competence and expects much from those around him. He has passionate convictions and deep sensitivities that make him both a good and loyal friend and an implacable enemy. Noah doesn't like to be hemmed in, to be told he cannot do something—he takes it as a challenge to surmount. He believes that original thought will win the day and that new thought is what is needed to change the world. He fears failing those who depend on him, and betrayal of someone who has finally gained his hard-earned trust. Likes/dislikes: Likes: Running, biking, swimming, orienteering, hiking, the batting cages at the park. Cooking, The Food Network, Iron Chef. Science fiction, both books and media, Doctor Who, Farscape, Star Trek (in all the flavors), X-Files--anything of that nature. Small coffeehouses, chai, conversation, live music. Botany, biodiversity, botanical gardens, environmentalism, the Pacific Northwest. Dislikes: Smoking, drugs, drinking to excess, driving while under the influence. Environmental irresponsibility, waste, willful ignorance, apathy. History: Born October 25, 1969 in St. Louis, Missouri, Noah was the third of four sons to Paul and Anna Browning, a retired physician and college humanities professor respectively. He grew up in a noisy, loving, competitive family, raised by parents who expected the best of their children and got it. Paul and Anna both have a great love of learning, wide-ranging interests, and inquisitive natures and passed on those gifts to all their children, though Noah and Ben seem to have gotten the lion's share of it. School was easy for Noah, and while he wasn't Mr. Popularity, he did all right for himself. He was on both the track and swimming teams and in science clubs, discovering early on what he wanted to do with his life. Colleges followed along with degrees and a doctorate; he worked like a fiend to get them, ambitous and driven. All work and no play makes Noah a very dull boy, so he didn't let that aspect of his life slide. He dated a fair amount, but had had relatively few relationships, particularly serious ones. That changed when he met Julia Wainwright. Beautiful, brilliant, athletic, competitive and holding the same environmental ideas he had, Julia was everything he'd been looking for. They married when she was twenty-eight and he was thirty, and were very happy blending their lives together. Julia's field was mathematics, and she taught at Seattle University while Noah taught at the University of Washington. Marriage suited them both, and their relationship blossomed. When the edict came for married couples to take the fertility serum, Noah protested the lack of choice in the matter, at the violation of personal rights. But in spite of that, a part of him did want a child--Julia wanted one, terribly--and they'd already been trying unsuccessfully for several years. So he and Julia went to the clinic every month in the hopes that they could conceive. A year ago, while driving home from teaching her classes, Julia's car was hit by a drunk driver. Julia was killed instantly. To add to the tragedy, Julia was finally pregnant, something Noah found out from the medical examiner. Noah was devastated. With the irresponsible action of another man, his whole world came apart. He took a short sabbatical and tried to put his life together again. Luckily he had the support of his large and loving family; that helped immensely and while he's grateful for their caring, he was glad when they finally left him on his own again. Noah's back to teaching and is beginning to find happiness--or at least some measure of contentment--in his daily life again. There's always the work, both at the university and in the community at large, and that's a comfort to him. He hasn't begun dating again, though friends and co-workers are tentatively starting to offer to set him up with women they know. He's not fool enough to think that he'll be excepted from the lottery--he figures he'll soon show up on the lists. Noah's in conflict about that; he loved being married and wanted a child, but wants to continue on his own timeline, not one imposed on him by others--how can someone else choose whom he should marry? Marriages are made of far more than simply compatible genetics. But neither does he want to end up in a re-education center--he likes his mind unaltered, thanks. Worrying about it is unproductive, so he's decided--uncharacteristically--for the moment just to go with the flow, to see what happens.
